Disaster recovery and business continuity are the plans for when something essential stops working: a system, a site, a vendor or a person. They define what keeps running, what is rebuilt and in what order, so the decision is made in a design meeting, not during the failure.

What they cover

• Essential operations: the small set of functions that must continue no matter what fails. Everything else is ranked behind them.
• Backups and copies: current, verifiable copies of data, held so the thing that destroyed the original cannot also destroy them.
• Failover and rebuild: how a service moves to a spare location or is rebuilt from clean pieces, and the time that takes.
• Communication: who is told, who decides, and what staff hear, so rumor does not drive the response.

Common gaps

• Untested backups: a restore that has never been run in practice is an assumption. The test is where missing pieces and corrupted files show up.
• Hidden single points: one database, one admin, one vendor portal that everything depends on. Failure of any of them stops several services at once.
• Stale documentation: a runbook that matches last year's environment fails in the exact order its steps are listed.

What to weigh

• Recovery cost curve: the speed of recovery gets expensive fast. Design for the recovery time each service actually needs, not the fastest available.
• People in the loop: a plan that assumes a departed employee's headcount fails on the day it is needed. Ownership has to be a named role, not a name.
• Vendor dependency: if a key service restarts through one provider's portal, the recovery speed is capped by that provider's response, not your plan.
