Transparent IT

Transparent IT means that the business can see what its technology is doing and what it costs, without needing to ask a technical person to translate. When IT is opaque, decisions are made on assumptions and budgets on someone else's summary.

What it means in practice

• Visible costs: what each system, subscription and provider costs, and how that number is built, so a rise can be questioned rather than accepted.
• Readable reporting: the state of systems and the work done on them is reported in terms the owner understands, not in internal jargon.
• Credible vendors: the terms, inclusions and exclusions of what is provided are stated clearly, and the provider can confirm them in writing.

Why it matters

• Budget integrity: hidden and surprise costs show up when they matter most, at renewal or when a change is needed.
• Accountability: when the numbers are legible, both sides can be held to the numbers they were given.
